CONCERNS

Familiarize yourself with some of the issues:

• 2005 Greenpoint-Williamsburg Waterfront Rezoning's Environmental Impact Statement is inadequate, biased & out of date
• 40 percent population increase to 11222, displacing local residents and businesses
• lack of affordable housing for seniors, disabled & low income families
• overcrowded MTA bus & subway system
• traffic congestion & resulting pedestrian, cyclist, vehicular accidents
• lack of substantial natural buffer zones to absorb high water
• overstressed local community facilities & resources
• threat to avian & monarch butterfly migratory flight paths
• remediation of toxic sites to be policed by citizens; high cancer rates
• increased taxes for locals; tax abatements for new residents
• destruction of neighborhood character, outer borough river/city views
• shadows cast over Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, Newtown Creek & East River
• 10-20 years of construction noise, air pollution, heavy truck traffic
• sites previously deemed archaeologically sensitive, no longer recognized
• EIS's use of CEQR Technical Manual wasn't to the advantage of the public
• LEED Certified construction with progressive advice from the likes of RMI
• loss of street parking, excessive monthly private parking fees
• lack of public passive green open space
• improve existing neighborhood schools, rather than pay for new school
• construction in the flood zone will contribute to future flooding elsewhere, unless it's stilted or dry moated
• neighborhood public schools have empty seats
• proposed public school is adjacent to a Superfund site, which has no conclusive plans for remediation
• 2005 Rezoning FEIS & subsequent EAS vacancy rates demand closer examination
• Contextual Zoning did not take into consideration existing context, rather just the existing zoning map
• local lndustrial Business Zone accommodates tourist industry, rather than lightweight manufacturing
• 2005 rezoning of block 2494, contradicts the zoning's logic of respecting neighborhood context
• historical buildings of architectural & social significance are are not yet landmarked
• traffic patterns are inaccurately represented in the 2005 FEIS
• ferry service is too expensive, needs to provide better Manhattan connections
• area's plowed snow piles are located at proposed Commercial St. & West St. intersection
• amount of guaranteed & needed affordable housing of a particular price-point is not provided
• Inclusionary Housing incentives are a strong financial driving force for these Massive projects
• lack of WAP supplemental access areas
• the city's hesitation for developing the park is driven by the want to sell air rights
• managed local feral cat colony suffer deaths often caused by cancer — a precursor of what?
• sustainable construction practices & building systems are not yet required
• gentrification is not the core issue, rather displacement & lack of progressive protections for tenants
• immigration is not the issue, rather our inability to understand overpopulation
• massive sprawl enables overpopulation, rather than address this global concern
• vertical (as is horizontal) speculative sprawl built on debt is obscene & inflammatory
• The neighborhood needs a non-compromised environmental remediation plan, to improve ground water & air quality
